20 Dollar Chef-Danielle Moinet

Today on the 20 Dollar Chef, I'm joined by special guest, Danielle Moinet. You may know her as Summer Rae from the WWE. She wanted to help get boyfriends who have fucked up, out of the dog house. I went with an at home sushi night. This meal is 100% over the budget. I figured if you want to keep your lady, 20 bucks wasn't going to cut it.

We made a Kani salad, a spicy tuna roll and added some sashimi. The sushi grade fish was the most expensive part here. Having the sushi rolling kit and the saki set was something you can easily get on Amazon. (Links below.)

The rice is the most important. I always use a rice cooker. Sushi rice is made a bit different than normal.

Sushi rice:

  • 2 cups uncooked glutinous white rice (sushi rice)
  • 3 cups water
  • 1/2 cup rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1/4 cup white sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Rinse rice in a strainer until the water runs clear. ( Use the white rice water to water your plants!) Combine with water in a rice cooker. Cool in fridge until you can handle nicely.

In a small saucepan, combine the rice vinegar, oil, sugar and salt. Cook on medium heat until the sugar dissolves. Cool, then stir into the cooked rice.  Keep stirring and the rice will dry as it cools.

Make sure to wrap your sushi rolling thing with saran wrap. Feel free to also get crazy with the rolls you make. This is meant to open the door for you to just try and do sushi at home. If you enjoy cooking you'll enjoy learning and developing this fun skill. I mean we aren't planning to open a sushi joint, just get creative and see what you can come up with at the house!
