Have The Flyers Sacrificed Themselves For The Betterment Of The City? I Hope So Too, Dude
I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again. I’m 25-years-old. I’ve been a Flyers fan all my life. When it comes to Philly sports, the Flyers have always been my #1. But for the first time in my life, I truly do not give a single shit about this team. There have been times when they’ve been bad before. There’s been times when they’ve been frustrating. But for the first time in my life, I don’t care because we’re better off without this team until a significant change is made (cough, cough, fire Dave Hakstol into the sun, cough, cough). The Flyers play the Penguins tonight at 7. The Sixers play the Cavs at the same time. I can’t believe I’m saying this but the time has finally come when the Sixers get the tv and the Flyers are stuck on the stream. This is what I warned everybody about when I wrote the blog 2 weeks ago titled, “The Flyers Are Going To Need To Make Some Changes Before They Become Completely Irrelevant In Philly”. Not only have the Flyers become irrelevant since then, but the majority of the city actively hates them right now. Which is even worse than just not caring at all.
The Eagles are 10-1. The Sixers are 8-3 so far in the month of November. And the Flyers have lost 7 straight games and are currently last in the Metro. 4 of those games have been either in overtime or a shootout. They had back-to-back shutout losses to Minnesota. They’re coming off of back-to-back overtime losses against the Islanders. This team is spitting in the face of Philly sports fans everywhere and it starts with that bag of shit Dave Hakstol continually relying on “veteran” “locker room guys” who have “put in their time” to get this team a win in overtime instead of, you know, actually good hockey players. So fuck Dave Hakstol and everything he’s doing to this organization right now. But I can only get so angry at this team without wasting my time and energy, which is why a spin zone is in order.
Have the Philadelphia Flyers sacrificed themselves in order to allow the Eagles and Sixers to be good? Listen. We all know that Philadelphia can rarely have nice things. We all knew it was too good to be true in the beginning of the season when the Flyers, Sixers and Eagles were all winning. We all knew that something either had to give or the world was going to end before Philly sports could have 3 good teams at the same time. Eagles fans have been waiting forever for a Super Bowl. Sixers fans have been waiting at least 5 years through The Process. So the Flyers, being a bunch of selfless hockey guys, decided that they’d take the fall to allow the other 2 teams to have success. I’m much more comfortable moving through the rest of the year with only 2 teams having high expectations without the wheels completely falling off than having to manage 3 teams with high expectations. You give Philly deep playoff runs for the all 3 of the Eagles, Sixers and Flyers and you know you’re only setting us up for total heartbreak. If it’s just the Eagles and Sixers? Well maybe there’s a chance this shit doesn’t blow up in our faces for once.
So yes. The Flyers suck and you should hate them at least until they get rid of Hakstol. That son of a bitch has some nerve putting Dale Weise and Jori Lehtera both in the lineup tonight in Pittsburgh after losing 7 straight. But maybe the Flyers sucking ass is just what needed to happen in order to bring this city back from the depths of hell. You walk around the city and people actually seem friendly to one another. You listen to sports radio and callers aren’t talking about committing suicide. Philly is a proud sports town right now and all it took was the Flyers to throw themselves off the Ben Franklin. I can live with that… for now. In the meantime, get rid of whoever you need to in order to build the best team around Ivan Provorov and Nolan Patrick and we’ll try again next time.
