The Mets Will Reportedly Buy The Syracuse Chiefs And Move Their Triple-A Team To Syracuse In 2019
Syracuse.com- The New York Mets have reached an agreement to buy the Syracuse Chiefs and make the International League baseball team its top minor league affiliate, according to two sources briefed about the deal. Under terms of the agreement, the Mets will acquire ownership of the Triple-A Chiefs from the Community Baseball Club of Central New York Inc., and continue to play its games at NBT Bank Stadium starting in 2019, the sources said. The Mets would own and operate the Syracuse Chiefs, the sources said, bringing in the resources necessary to build a franchise that struggled in recent years with its finances.
The deal would end almost six decades of community ownership of the Syracuse Chiefs, dating back to 1961, and cut off the team’s nine-year affiliation with the World Series-contending Washington Nationals. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, Mets Chief Operating Officer Jeff Wilpon and Onondaga County Executive Joanie Mahoney plan to announce the agreement Tuesday afternoon at NBT Bank Stadium, one source said.
What is this? Another good move that Mets fans have been clamoring for? Dare I say that the New York Metropolitans are on a winning streak in 2017? First Old Man Collins “resigns”, then Ray Ramirez gets canned, and now the Triple-A team isn’t three time zones and 2500 miles away. Yeah, Syracuse is wildling country to people from downstate. But it’s only technically about 250 miles away from New York City. Oh yeah and a bunch of your talented but young kids aren’t alone in Sin City or are being developed in a place that makes Coors Field during the steroid era look like a pitcher’s park. It’s almost like the Mets are listening to every gripe their fans have jammed into an imaginary suggestion box over the last five years and finally addressing it like Michael Corleone during a baptism. Did someone hack the Wilpons’ phone and email (password: 1234) to make all these moves while Fred and Jeff are out spending that Jay Bruce blood money? I don’t know and I don’t care. The bottom line is that it’s done and hopefully it continues with ownership actually *gasp* spending big money in free agency before the franchise has to decide which pitcher they invest big money in for the long term. And we need a name for the Triple-A team to be even close to as good as the Rumble Ponies. 2018 is our year, baby. I can feel it in my plums.
