It Could Be Worse For Mito Pereira, He Could Have Been Jean van de Velde

As everyone has seen now, Mito Pereira's drive on 18 cost him the PGA championship. Banks did a great job covering the PGA yesterday.

The pictures on the internet started floating around of Jean van de Velde standing in water with a deer in the headlights look on his face.

For those unfamiliar , Jean van de Velde held a 3 shot lead at the 1999 British Open , and it all unfolded from there. He would then lose in a playoff to Paul Lawrie.

Absolute pain. Also, the dumbest decisions in the world all one after another. The absolute denial of "everything is fine" and "I can fix this" by rolling up his pant legs and climbing into the water to hit the ball is reminiscent of a kid who gets into their first car accident and tries to pop the bumper back in so their parents won't find out. Insane behavior.

So while Mito Pereira's drive wide right was dumb, he can find solace in that as long as Jean van de Velde's clip is still around, he will always have someone dumber than him. It still sucks, but it's always better to be the 2nd biggest idiot than the first.
