Jacob deGrom Will Not Pitch Tomorrow And Instead Will Be Placed On The 10-Day DL
As a rational Mets fan that realizes there are 131 games left in this season and hopefully many years left in Jacob deGrom’s arm, I know this is the right move. The fact the Mets would wheel deGrom out to the mound after hyperextending his elbow and sending every Mets fan into cardiac arrest last week seemed as stupid as it did crazy. Skipping at least one start to be cautious with the most important player on the team seems like an absolute no-brainer, which is what KFC and I said hammered home during our Mets therapy session.
But this is also the No Brain Mets. I don’t know if they are better at botching PR moves or injuries, but it’s a 1A and 1B situation. I literally wrote in my blog about deGrom’s MRI coming back clean about the typical path Mets players take when there’s an injury.

1. Player tries to play and no DL moves are made
2. Mets play shorthanded for a week as player rests
3. Player lands on 10-day DL
4. Player transitions for 60-day DL for roster purposes before hopefully coming back in September
Now since deGrom is a starter whose turn wasn’t up yet, the Mets technically never played shorthanded. And I think giving the most important arm on the team extra rest after an injury is a great idea. But everything I have seen as a Mets fan tells me that this could end up bad. Even all the good juju from the beginning of the year has vanished as the Mets sunk from 1st in the entire National League to 3rd in the NL East alone. I think/hope/pray that Jake will be back in a week absolutely fine. But we don’t move a bunch of Cuncel and sad Mr. Mets t-shirts because things usually work out for the Mets. Maybe being smart with an injury is a sign that things are actually changing in Flushing. Or maybe we are fucking cursed and this is yet another reminder of it. Regardless of what happens, Mets fans around the world will be holding their collective breath during every deGrom start the rest of the season. Hopefully there are plenty of them the rest of this season and seasons to come.
