Daily Mail — An astronomer announced a ‘ground breaking’ discovery of a bright light in the night’s sky – only to find out he was looking at Mars.

The cosmologist published his unfortunate mistake on the Astronomers Telegram, which allows experts to share their discoveries, only forty minutes later to realise he’d made a blunder.

Unfortunately for this expert, the object in question had been observed through a telescope by Galileo more than 400 years ago.

I feel like if you’re an astronomy guy you gotta know Mars. Just have to. That’s like top 3 or 4 things you learn. Earth, moon, sun, Mars. And if you’re out here claiming a big new bright light discovery, the first thing you gotta make sure it isn’t is Mars. Just have to cross-check that. It’s like this fucking guy walked outside, looked up, saw a light, and said, “Wow, I just discovered that.”

And that was it. That was his system. Galileo god bless his heart was scouring Mars with telescopes at a time when the bow and arrow was the deadliest weapon on earth but Professor Dunsby’s claiming ground-breaking discovery in 2018? What an idiot.

At least he’s getting what he deserves and by that I mean The Astronomer’s Telegram is boom roasting him on twitter.
