OH MY! Obviously I’m way more an MMA guy than boxing guy, but when you talk Golovkin, Canelo, Lomachenko, McGregor (1-0 morally), the current icons of the sport, the ones that move the needle into the mainstream world, I get caught up in the sweet science talk like crazy. I bob and weave my head along with every punch thrown in the fight, I stand arm in arm with Teddy Atlas on corruption accusations, and I score every round at home with wild confidence. It’s the big fight feel and there’s nothing like it. We saw it with Mayweather/McGregor last August in a massive spectacle way we’ve never seen before, and then we saw it less than one month later in the more traditional sense with GGG/Canelo. After both were said and done, the pound-for-pound better fight was clear, and shocker, it was the one featuring two of the best boxers in the world in their prime. Gennady Golovkin vs Canelo Alvarez lived up to all expectations and then some. It only had one issue: there was no clear victor. The judges scored the fight a draw, and while I myself at home had it at a draw, their scorecards (Adalaide Byrd’s 118-110 for Alvarez) raised some questions about crookedness. It also raised Teddy Atlas’ heart rate to an alarming level.
Now, on May 5th – YEP, that’s right! Cinco de Mayo! – we’re getting the rematch. I slightly favored Canelo going into the last fight, and I’m hammering Canelo now. I like GGG, I really do. Seems like a great guy, is one of the best fighters I’ve had the pleasure of watching, but he’s just not beating Canelo Alvarez on Cinco de Mayo. It won’t happen. Disagree all you want, you’ve got a little over three months to do so, but on May 5th we’re gonna have a new IBF Middleweight Champion, a new WBA (Super) Middleweight Champion (kinda I think), a new WBC Middleweight Champion, and a new bunch of other shit too. Boxing’s confusing. GET HYPE THO!
