The Athletic Set Out To Destroy Newspapers. To "let them continuously bleed until we are the last ones standing." Today They Sold To A Newspaper.

Look at newspapers getting a W in 2022!!!! Sometimes you gotta root for the underdog, you know? Like when a 13 seed is up by 2 in the second half of the first round of an NCAA tournament game, you rip up your bracket and start rooting for Southern Alabama to knock off Kansas. That's how I feel about the NYT buying The Athletic. The Athletic was the hot shot, the new kid on the block who promised to basically end local sportswriting as we knew it. They wanted to scoop up all the writers from every major city and make one centralized sports page. In theory, it makes sense. It practice it cost VCs a shit ton of money (do you know how many cities and teams there are???) and they were unable to turn a profit. So they had to tuck their tail and wouldn't you know it, sell to a paper. Amazing. 

I don't think The Athletic totally sucks or anything like that. Some people did good work. But for the newspapers to chalk up a win over them, you gotta tip your cap. 

And not to make this a Barstool dick sucking blog, but obviously this is why we are different than every other internet company. Nobody is walking around with The Athletic merch on. Nobody is going to their live shows. Nobody is buying their frozen pizza. As Herb Brooks once said, you can't just win on talent alone. Look around, there's like 5 talented people at this entire company, and that's why it works. Nobody better than us.
