The WNBA Draft Is Tomorrow Night and Here’s Your Preview for the 2021 Season

The WNBA Draft is tomorrow night in New York City, and like so many things, it’s gotten fucked by COVID. It’s virtual or I guarantee you I would be there in person.

The past week has been HUGE for women’s basketball. Not only did the Women’s Final Four games DELIVER, with Stanford surviving a couple last-second shots by Baylor and Arizona knocking off heavily favored UConn and Paige Bueckers, but the National Championship also came down to the last second.

I was incredibly fortunate over the past seven days to interview Stanford Head Coach Tara Vanderveer, Baylor’s star Didi RIchards, Arizona’s All American guard Aari McDonald, and South Carolina’s filthy guard Zia Cooke. What an amazing week!

Richards and McDonald are both eligible for tomorrow night's WNBA draft, and here’s what people are saying about them.

Aari is slated to be a top 5 pick. The Dallas Wings have as many 1st round picks as almost the OKC Thunder this draft. They hold 5 of the first 13. It appears they will take Aari at 5 and boy will she be an immediate help for them. She finished this season with 21 points, 6 rebounds and 4.0 assists and was a STAND OUT in the NCAA tournament. She put the clamps on Paige Bueckers (the player of the year) while putting almost 30 on her head. Her handles look like Allen Iverson or Kyrie, but don’t believe me, that’s coming straight from Geno Auriemma, head coach of the Uconn women’s team.

Stanford’s head coach Tara Vanderveer threw the HOUSE at Aari on the last play of the natty, and despite being only 5’6” and being triple-teamed by three TREES, she damn near pulled it off. Vanderveer was amazed.

If Dallas wants a nasty, stone-cold killer and a tough two way guard with the heart of a real immediate impact leader, they will take Aari. It’s possible they could end up drafting Kiana Williams from Stanford as well, but I think Aari is a little better fit for them.

In terms of Didi, I think the most likely spot for her to land is in LA at #22. She not only fills an immediate need after Candace Parker left for Chicago, but it’s her dream to play there. She even admitted she has a secret crush on Kyle Kuzma. Wouldn’t that be an interesting pairing!

This WNBA season is going to be ridiculous with the return of Elena Delle Donne and Sabrina Ionescu and a bunch of other players hobbled by injuries or taken out by COVID protocols. Texas center Charli Collier is pretty much a lock to be #1 followed by a Finnish import named Awak Kuier and then Arella Guirantes of Rutgers, Rennia Davis of Tennessee, and Aari McDonald. Those are most people’s Top 5, but as always, draft day is unpredictable and someone may trade up to fill a need and throw the entire big board into chaos.

Tune in tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m. on ESPN for the WNBA draft, and guess what bitches? That means we’ll be having lots of WNBA coverage on the blog when the season kicks off over the summer.
