If You Go to UC Davis and Promise to Not Travel for Spring Break, They Will Reward You With A HUGE Cash Prize

If you are a student at UC Davis and are willing to suspend your spring break plans for a generous cash sum, you are in luck. The school is handing out a whopping $75 to kids who agree to forego a week of booze-filled debauchery at the beach in favor of enough cash to barely buy a new video game.

LA Times — Students who agree to stay on campus during the break can receive $75 gift cards to spend locally, according to the university’s spring break grant program announcement last week.

“The idea behind this was to provide a positive incentive for students to follow public health guidance,” said Sheri Atkinson, associate vice chancellor for student affairs. “Based on how our students have done so far, we’re pretty confident that this group is conscientious and will do what they signed up to do.”

Wait, a $75 *gift card* to "spend locally"? So in exchange for giving up a trip you've presumably been saving for and looking forward to for months, you can have $75 in coupons to the local sandwich shop and bookstore. Sounds like a great trade to me.

We actually discussed on this week's episode of Macrodosing how little money you can get college students to do things for — like donating plasma or having CIA mind control experiments done on you — but even for the segment of the population most known for having no money, $75 feels insulting. And again, it's not even cash, it's some janky gift card only good in the greater Davis area.

But I suppose if you weren't going anywhere anyway or are just super jacked up to have a whole extra $75 in your pocket, this could be the spring break course of action for you. Eating at Panera Bread instead of blacking out on the beach, every college student's dream.
