Making a Murderer's Brendan Dassey Might FINALLY Be Released From Prison

MADISON, Wis. – The lawyers representing Brendan Dassey, who was featured in Netflix’s docuseries “Making a Murderer” for his conviction in the 2005 murder of Teresa Halbach, filed a petition Wednesday for executive clemency with Gov. Tony Evers.

The petition asks Evers to consider either a pardon, which would result in Dassey’s release from prison and the restoration of some of his legal rights, or a commutation, which would result in his release or a shortened sentence.

His lawyers focused on his alleged innocence and the “extreme length of his sentence,” according to a copy of the petition obtained by USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin. Dassey, 29, is serving a life sentence and won’t be eligible for parole until 2048, when he will be 59.

This is perfect timing as Eddie and I just interviewed Lawyer Chad from Manitowoc County for yesterday and today’s Dog Walks, and by perfect timing I mean it’s kinda shitty timing since the interview was already recorded.

After the interview, I reached out to Lawyer Chad once I saw this article pop up and he says this might change things a bit.

From what I gather from the convo, Dassey is basically asking for mercy.  Everyone has their own opinion and interpretation on Dassey’s involvement in the crime, including those in power.  There’s a new WI governor now that may see the case/sentencing differently than the previous governor did, and as a person who has the power to pardon Dassey or lower his sentence, Dassey might actually see the light of day again at least sooner than his first parole date when he’s 59.  Not a guarantee, but it’s a Hail Mary worth throwing for Dassey.

Poor timing on this news drop aside, if you haven’t listened to the 1st part of the interview yet, go listen now – it’s great.  Lawyer Chad grew up in Manitowoc County and only lived a few miles from Avery Auto where Theresa Halbach’s remains were found.  He was a freshman in HS when the murder went down and his mom taught at the Dassey’s middle school.

Oh, and he also interned at the Manitowoc County DA’s office in 2012.  His perspective on the whole case is very interesting for all of the reasons above.  Nobody better to give the inside scoop.  Fire it up, bang bang!
