Jeff (29/100): ‘Ma’ is a disappointing horror movie with bad pacing and a script and story that supply more unintentional laughs than scares. Octavia Spencer, as always, does a nice job in the lead role, but her performance stands no chance at sticking out amidst a bad movie.
A lack of identity and cohesion are the two main problems with ‘Ma’ that really stick out. It’s hard to really grasp what the movie wants to be as the tone drastically shifts all over the place. There’s a clear message with the movie, but it never finds a balance between its moments of campiness and seriousness. The characters really struggle to become anything worth remembering, even with a solid performance from Spencer. With fairly poor pacing, the movie always feels like it is just going to jump off the rails at some point.
‘Ma’ is a mess and its very clear throughout from start to finish. We’ve seen plenty of intriguing horror concepts fall flat as of late and this one falls right in line with those movies.
KenJac (14/100): This movie is bad.
