Urban Meyer to Become Ohio State Assistant Athletic Director, So There's No Chance He Goes to Notre Dame or USC

Urban Meyer is preparing to coach his final game at Ohio State on New Year’s Day in the Rose Bowl, but he won’t be leaving the Ohio State athletic department when the game is finished. Instead, he’ll help run it.

Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith says that Meyer will be taking on the title of assistant athletic director.

While Smith may not be specific about what the job will entail for Meyer, he did say that Meyer will help to raise money, do speaking engagements, and other things like teaching a leadership class.

Smith also said he’s not sure how Meyer will manage his new role with the school while making sure not to get too involved with the football program, saying “my team has to be very diligent in helping him understand that you’ve got to maintain that separation.” Smith also said that Meyer will be on the field during Ohio State football games.

Meyer announced that he would retire following the Rose Bowl on Dec. 4. He retired at Florida following the 2010 season and spent a year in the broadcast booth before returning to the sideline to take over Ohio State.

Well, there you have it. To all you keyboard doctors out there dismissing his serious health concerns that have ended his career in coaching, Urban Meyer is not going to Notre Dame. And he’s not going to USC. He’s taking a cushy job that allows him to stay a part of Buckeye Nation, and more importantly to him, stay at home. He’s a family man.

Congrats, Coach. Well deserved. Teaching leadership classes and having your finger on the pulse of the most popular and powerful brand in college sports? Not a bad way to retire. On your own terms. The only question I have now is how long until Urban ditches that assistant title and takes over as the full-time AD? Gene Smith is an absolute oaf. I’m not sure how we’ve had the tattoo scandal and the Zach Smith situation within the last decade, and while both Hall of Fame coaches didn’t survive them, big ol’ Gene Smith is still bringing in a couple million a year to sit his fat ass in an office and mishandle controversy after controversy. And on top of that, he also sits his fat ass on the College Football Playoff Committee and hasn’t been able to get the Buckeyes into the playoff two years in a row. I would’ve thought The Ohio State athletic director would’ve been able to throw his visibly high weight around a little more than that!

Sad! And while I’m sad that the Buckeyes don’t get another chance to remind the country of their dominance over Alabama in the CFP, I will take the consolation prize of seeing Coach Meyer off into the beautiful Pasadena sunset with an easy Rose Bowl victory over the Pac 12 Chumps. All while making me a rich man in the process because folks, Vegas has made a mistake with this one.

I just don’t see how the Buckeyes don’t win by a million next week. Sure, if Washington’s coaching staff has a great plan to stop our attack and their players play out of their minds, then I could see the Huskies keeping the game within maybe 5 scores. But the line in Vegas is 6.5? First of all, it’s Urban’s last game. That should be all you need to hear. 0% chance we lose. You want to start 2019 off with a strong investment? Put your entire estate on the Buckeyes moneyline. Free money. But on top of that, it’s probably Dwayne Haskins’ last game too, and definitely Mike Weber and other underclassmen like Dre’Mont Jones that are heading to the NFL Draft early. And ALL of them are playing in the bowl game. For Coach Meyer. This game is going to be a celebration of 7 years of dominance over the NCAA. You could put anyone out there against us and the outcome would be the same. Washington just happens to be the team that drew the short straw. Sorry Huskies, that’s just how it’s going to be that day. And then, to the rest of the country, it’s officially A New Day.
