A teacher has been fired after she failed to follow the ‘pregnancy rota’ of her school in China, sparking controversy.

The woman, Pan Jiayi (not her real name), was accused of getting pregnant ‘out of turn’ in May last year and was asked by her boss to leave her position without severance.

She filed an unfair dismissal claim against the school and received nearly 60,000 yuan (£6,700) in compensation after winning the case in January this year, according to a report on Wednesday in The Procuratorate Daily, a newspaper under China’s Supreme People’s Procuratorate.

Most of Pan’s colleagues at the kindergarten – which was not named – were young mothers hoping to get pregnant with a second child after China changed its policy to allow two children per family.

Due to overwhelming requests, the school in 2015 decided to start the practice of a strict ‘pregnancy rota’ by creating a timetable based on their employees’ age, length of service and when they got married.

Employees must hand in a written request before they are ‘allowed to get pregnant,’ the report said, adding that the schedule is designed to allow a gap of two to three months between each pregnancy.

I’m sorry….what? Hand up, my brain and my body are completely fried from the Dunce Tour in Boston, and I’m definitely not all there right now, but I’m pretty sure pregnancy rotations aren’t normal right? Like there aren’t principals at American schools telling women when they should get pregnant, right? I knew China was a different country (they literally are) and that they handle their shit differently with little nonsense unlike us, but this is a whole different ball game. You pretty much have to ask permission from your boss to get pregnant. If you get pregnant out of turn you are fired. That’s diabolical.

The idea itself makes sense and helps avoid a ton of teachers missing at the same time, but in terms of respecting people as human beings I’d say this is a tough one to get behind. If you miss your chance to get pregnant you basically can’t have a kid forever? I’ve never had a kid nor do I plan on having one in the next few years, but getting pregnant isn’t just as easy as a snap of a finger. ‘Pregnancy rota’ just put China on a whole different level of no-nonsense in this world.
