The NHL Needs To Change Their Draft Eligibility Rules And Let Alexis Lafrenière Into The League A Year Early

Here’s the thing. Life is short and you never know what’s going to happen. We could wake up tomorrow and human beings could be wiped off the face of the Earth. Uncertainty is just a part of life, ya know? And there is beauty in that uncertainty because what it does is force us to appreciate the things we have in life right now instead of constantly looking toward the future. I’m sorry to get so deep on everybody right there but that’s just my long-winded reasoning behind why Alexis Lafrenière should be in the NHL next year instead of having to wait until 2020 when he’s actually draft eligible.

The kid is just 16-years-old right now. He’ll be 17 in a couple of days which means that he’d be 17 to start next year’s NHL season but would turn 18 about a week into the year. Last season he had 42 goals and 80 points in 60 games as a 15/16 year old playing for Rimouski in the QMJHL. The same team that some guy named Crosby played junior for before he made the jump to the NHL. Now he may not be on the exact same level as Crosby who had 135 points as a 16-year-old playing for Rimouski, but Lafrenière is still out there doing shit like this in the QMJHL when he’s still 2 years away from being draft eligible.

Was it necessary for him to go between the legs right there? Absolutely not. But is the game at the junior level too easy for him and he’s just looking to challenge himself for fun? Next question.

It just sucks that we’re going to have to wait another full year before this kid to get into the league just because his parents didn’t have sex a few months earlier. The only people who should be happy about this are the Ottawa Senators because they don’t have a 1st round pick in next year’s draft but have two picks in the 1st round of 2020 to pick up a good ol’ French Canadian boy 1st overall. Everybody else should feel like they’re getting robbed though.
