David Wright Fouls Out In The Last At Bat Of His Career

I’ll admit that I saw a bunch of potential scenarios for David Wright’s last at bat. A heroic home run. An opposite field double. A strike out on three pitches. A ground out like last night. I was ready for all of those outcomes. And instead it just…ended. Like that. Peter O’Brien became the latest name that Mets fans will curse in their nightly prayers to a God that doesn’t care about them. Trevor Richards too. You never want to say that you want the pitcher to groove your retiring star a pitch or for the first baseman to have an error at the perfect time in a meaningless September game between the Mets and Marlins. But damn that was underwhelming. If there was ever a moment for the Mets to bat out of order, it was the inning after that. Throw David Wright in Austin Jackson’s spot and dare the Marlins to say something.

Yet somehow that was also the perfect Mets ending to the most beloved player I have ever rooted for in my life. Wright made it all the way back to the Majors so his kids could see him play and I guess we should thank the Baseball Gods for at least giving us that.

Oh yeah and this moment, which was by far the highlight of the night.

God I’m gonna miss that guy. And that smile. Okay this is getting weird, time to wrap up this blog. I rebuke Peter O’Brien.
