Alrighty then. Did anybody actually see this one coming? I honestly don’t know and am genuinely asking, was this even a possibility up until it was announced? Cause I haven’t seen, heard, or even thought about this one. Gotta give Brand credit in his ascension up the ranks. In December of 2016, Brand was named as the player development consultant of the Philadelphia 76ers. In August of 2017, he was named general manager of the Delaware Blue Coats, the Sixers D-League squad. Now, in just over a year and after Colangelo’s burners flamed out and a realization Sam Hinkie will stay dead for our sins, Elton Brand is the general manager of YOUR, Philadelphia 76ers. And that’s after he already took 5+ years and over $80 million from the franchise.

Normally I would take the stance that former star athletes don’t make great executives. Isiah Thomas being the most recently famous one off the top of the noggin’. But then again, I don’t know shit. Larry Bird, Danny Ainge, and John Elway have done pretty well for themselves calling the shots as GM. And after being so wrong about Doug Perderson upon his hire to the point I often question my own existence, I’ve grown up to give everyone a fair shot at what they can do. So, rock on, Elton. Let’s see what you can shake loose. Cue it.

PS – Little known fact: Elton Brand served as an executive producer on Christian Bale’s criminally underrated Vietnam POW movie, Rescue Dawn. The more you know.
