Metro- We’ve been well-warned of the evils of spending hours scrolling through social media on our phone. We’re going to develop tech neck. We’re the sole cause of loneliness. We’re not looking up and appreciating the world around us. These things have failed to convince us to put down our phones. Perhaps this reason will be heartbreaking enough to spur us into action. Spending hours staring at your phone is making your dog sad, according to one expert. When we pay more attention to our phones than to our dogs, we damage our emotional bond, making our dogs feel lonely and isolated. That can lead to doggy depression and behavioural issues. ‘We’re a nation obsessed by our mobile phones,’ veterinary surgeon and founder of VetUK, Iain Booth, tells Metro.co.uk. ‘But this gadget dependence is jeopardising the important relationships we have with out pets, particularly dogs and to a lesser extent house cats.’ Ian explains that our phone dependency affects dogs more so than cats because dogs are pack animals, and look to their humans for leadership and reassurance.

Well that’s a pickle for dog owners huh? Dog owners can either stare at their phones for hours on end and make their dogs sad OR they can stop staring at their screens and make their dogs happy. Will this study make people pay less attention to their phones and more attention to their pups? I’m not so sure but if there was one thing that was going to break people’s cell phone addiction, it would be this. The idea of making your dog sad is something dog owners avoid at all costs. Dog owners go to the ends of the Earth to make their dogs happy. So will people change their ways thanks to this study? Time will tell.

Actually time won’t tell. I already have the answer to the question and that answer is a resounding no. Nothing is breaking people’s cell phone addiction any time soon, not even sad dogs. You could start threatening to kill of people’s family members and we’d all keep checking Twitter. Cell phone addiction is the strongest drug out there. Cell phone addiction is so strong that we don’t even look at it as a real addiction yet. We’re all so busy looking at our phones that we don’t have time to acknowledge that we’re addicted. It’s the most widespread and rampant addiction there is. I’m not looking down on people who are addicted to their phones because I’m one of the fiends. Probably more so than most people because of the nature of my job. So no, sad dogs are not going to stop people from being on their phones. Sorry pups.
