Open Letter To The Hockey Gods On Behalf Of St. Louis Blues Fans

Dear Hockey Gods,

My name is Ben Friedman (some people call me YP) and I’m from St. Louis, Missouri and I have a very clear ask of you. As honest as I could ever be, I’m asking you to please please please let it be the Blues year this time. I’m writing to you because nothing else has worked. And when I tell you that nothing else has worked, I absolutely mean it, just look at the results…

If you have arthritis from scrolling, I apologize to you, but I thought it was necessary to show the urgency with which this request comes to your attention. That is the final results for 50 seasons in the National Hockey League and 50 times the Blues have not won the Stanley Cup. Its the longest drought for a team that has never won in all of hockey. Sometimes, it has felt like it is never going to happen in human history. No matter how dominant the Blues have been in the regular season, the train has ALWAYS come off the tracks when its mattered.

We’ve paid our dues in gut-wrenching defeats by bitter rivals that get replayed over and over…

We’ve endured embarrassing upsets of the highest degree, in fact, one of my earliest memories is playing shinny hockey at my friends house while the Blues lost to the San Jose Sharks (AND THE UGLY ASS DUDE MIKE RICCI no offense) after they won the President’s Trophy. They lost to an 8 seed after being the best team in the league can you believe it?!

My whole childhood, one thing remained unfortunately constant: The Blues were good in the regular season and lost in the playoffs. I remember watching the Western Conference Finals against the Avalanche with my Dad. 3 wins away from the Cup Final! Turgeon, Young, and Demitra, that team was so good I really thought it was it.

Year after year its just the same song. Its hard to explain to people because the Blues are not “losers” at all, they’re actually a fun team to root for!

We’ve been lucky enough to have some of the most unreal players on the planet through the years like Federko, Hull, Oates, Macinnis, Gretzky, Pronger, Tkachuk, Shanahan, Demitra, and on and on. There’s been a lot of incredible teams and moments. I can’t remember them being BAD for longer than a year or two.

I’m talking exciting OT Winners…

Insanely intense Game 7’s

…but no Stanley Cups.

The Blues definitely are not losers per se… but just not winners… yet.

We’ve tried all sorts of superstitions and offerings to the hockey gods, some bigger than others

We’ve even tried to re-invent human anatomy

But I’m sure you know all this already, you’re the Hockey Gods, of course you know all this! I’m obviously not breaking any news to you, I’m just writing to show you that I understand the gravity of the situation, and I want you to know how much our entire city would appreciate some good karma. Maybe a post here, or a lucky offsides review there, anything you can possibly do to help make it happen.

We’re a good natured Midwestern city with a passion for hockey. Just 2 years ago we had 5 kids from St. Louis go in the first round of the NHL draft! Shit, we even got one on the team right now, the Oakville native Pat Maroon (aka the BIG RIG) who has battled and grinded his way to being a productive player in the NHL. Carolina, Tampa, Dallas, Los Angeles, Anaheim, and all sorts of non-traditional hockey markets have won cups, and I think the time has never been more right for Missouri to be added to that list. The Blues are HOT and have battled back from being in last place in the league just a few months ago, they are playing the right way. Just give us a break just this once and we’ll never ask for anything ever again! I really believe its gonna happen, deep in my heart!

I’m sorry this is so long Hockey Gods but its a really desperate situation. No matter what, we’re thankful for anything you can do and will be rooting with everything we have this Spring to stay on your good side. See you tonight.

Sincerely,
Blues Fans
