A Recent 1st Round Draft Pick Reportedly Won't Make It To The NHL Because He's Too Addicted To Video Games
When it comes to rumors in the NHL, there are only a handful of guys who you can 100% trust every single word they say. Guys like Bob McKenzie or Darren Dreger or Pierre LeBrun. Jeff Marek is one of those guys. In case you somehow don’t know who he is, he’s a host on Sportsnet and he’s very well connected. So if Jeff Marek says there’s a kid who is most likely going to make it to the NHL because of a video game addiction, then chances are we’ll never hear this kid’s name in the NHL.
A recent first round draft pick of a very, very prominent team. Let’s think about what teams are very, very prominent. Right off the bat you have to consider the Original 6 teams very, very prominent. Especially the Toronto Maple Leafs and Montreal Canadiens when it comes to the media in Canada. Next up you’d probably have to consider the Pittsburgh Penguins a prominent team considering they won the last 2 Cups. But they haven’t had a 1st round pick in the last 2 years so probably not them. Other than those teams, I’m not exactly sure who else qualifies as “very, very prominent”. Maybe the Oilers just because of McDavid? Anyway, that should probably shorten up the list of who Marek is talking about here.
And now here’s my dilemma. I have no idea if I’m allowed to laugh about this or not. Because on one hand, obviously this sucks. Here is a kid who has probably been working his ass off his entire life to get to the point in his hockey playing career where he is right now. To be a first round draft pick and playing junior hockey at the highest level. He’s probably one step away from getting called up for at least 9 games next season. And all of a sudden the kid can’t stop playing Fortnite and he’s going to end up fizzling out in the AHL for a few years before having to bounce around between the ECHL, playing in Europe, making a quick stop to play in Australia, and then ultimately ending up in the beer leagues by the age of 28 without getting a single shift in the NHL. That fucking sucks. Personally, I blame Smitty for all of it.
But on the other hand… I mean… well c’mon. Could you imagine Gordie Howe not making it to the NHL because he got super addicted to playing checkers? Could you imagine Bobby Orr not making it to the NHL because he was too busy playing Monopoly? I don’t think that “funny” is the word that I’m looking for because a kid’s career going down the drain isn’t funny. But I’m looking for a world that is at least somewhat related to funny. I’m too lazy to open up a thesaurus right now so you can all choose the word I’m looking for, for me. Either way, it’s that. I guess it’s just a sign of the times we are living in.
