Dr. Dre Lost A Trademark Infringement Case Against A Pennsylvania Gynecologist Named Dr. Drai

COS- In 2015, Dr. Dre entered into a trademark infringement battle with a gynecologist named Draion M. Burch. The Pennsylvania-based doctor sought to trademark his name as Dr. Drai, but was met with objections from the hip-hop mogul, who feared the similarities in their names would confuse consumers and fans alike. Now, some three years later, the US trademark office has finally weighed in and decided to dismiss Dr. Dre’s case, as the BBC reports. In its ruling, it argued that, despite the name similarities, the Compton rapper had failed to show that people would in fact be misled into unintentionally purchasing Dr. Burch’s products instead of Dre’s own. The trademark office noted that because of Dr. Burch’s expensive speaking engagement fees (roughly $5,000) — he’s also a published author in the field — it’s likely customers would exercise caution and use their due diligence before forking over any money.

A couple things. One, why the hell did DR. DRE bring a case against this guy? I didn’t go to law school but that seems like a crazy thing to do. Dr. Dre is one of the most famous human beings on the planet. His headphones are engrained in pop culture forever. He’s worth a gajillion dollars. He made The Chronic. He made Still D.R.E. He introduced the world to the likes of Snoop Dogg and Eminem and 50 Cent. The fact that he thought a gynecologist in Pennsylvania was gonna somehow confuse his fans is crazy town. It takes such a specific circumstance for this to be a problem. A hip hop fan in Pennsylvania looking for an OBGYN to get a pap smear, sees Dr. Drai and thinks, “Wait. Is that Dr. Dre the musician or Dr. Drai the OBGYN? Ugh this is so confusing!”

It’s even funnier that he ultimately lost. Apparently the lawsuit has been going on for three years. Dre for sure thought he was gonna crush the OBGYN and keep it moving. Nope. Turns out Dr. Drai was a much more formidable opponent than Jermaine Dupri. When was the last time Dr. Dre took an L? He’s been seemingly untouchable for two decades. Dee Barnes maybe? Feels like forever. The fact that his latest L came at the hands of a vagina doctor in Pennsylvania is shocking to say the least.
