Mets Reliever AJ Ramos (Giancarlo's Roommate) Says Stanton's Slow Start Can Be Pinpointed To His Furniture Not Arriving on Time For His New Apartment

New York Yankees v Boston Red Sox

NY Times

DETROIT — When Giancarlo Stanton left Yankee Stadium after his first homestand in New York amid a crescendoing chorus of boos, there was no shortage of theories as to why the newly acquired slugger had such a miserable first week in the Bronx.

Maybe the jeers — from a homestand in which he had twice fanned five times in a game — had gotten into his head. Maybe he was trying too hard to make a good first impression. Maybe he was not cut out for the scrutiny of New York.

As it turns out, maybe it was something else all together.

Maybe it was the furniture.

When Stanton arrived back in New York on April 1 after the Yankees’ first series of the season, in Toronto, the furniture he had ordered for the apartment he is leasing with Mets pitcher A.J. Ramos had not yet arrived and there were still repairs and upgrades that needed to be done.

Stanton stayed some nights at a hotel.

“Just think of anybody moving, and add 50,000 people at the stadium at your work,” said Ramos, who was in town with the Mets the first three days Stanton had returned. “It adds a little more pressure.”

Fucking incompetent moving companies, man. How do we mess up Giancarlo’s furniture? How is it April and his apartment isn’t ready after being traded for in December? What a weird story to be reading on a rainy Monday afternoon to be finding out Stanton’s apartment still hasn’t been set up and he’s been all out of whack because he can’t sleep in his own bed.

That meant that when Stanton was not at Yankee Stadium that week studying video, working on his swing in the batting cages and getting acclimated to his new surroundings, he was unpacking his belongings, working the phones to sort out furniture delivery and lighting upgrades, and making sure everything was all set for a visit from his father, uncle and aunt that week.

Of course he’s struggling! If I had to be on the phone with idiotic moving company phone operators all day I would lose my goddamn mind too. If I had to leave my game to go sleep at a 5 star platinum hotel of course my body would be all screwy. What a disaster! Lighting upgrades not installed? Erroneous on both accounts! I won’t stand for it. What do we need Giancarlo? I’ll come over right now. I’ll assemble an Avengers-type-squad to install those upgrades, fix the shades, vacuum the floors, whatever you need I’ve got you. This ends today.

For real that’s got to be pretty annoying when you expect your furniture to arrive as you settle into a completely new city, a week goes by, and we’ve got nothing. You have to be comfortable if you’re going to be expected to hit baseballs to Saturn and Giancarlo wasn’t comfortable the first week or so in April. In Boston this past week he looked much better at the plate as he probably didn’t have to worry about being on the phone with the movers. Think this story is bullshit? Giancarlo isn’t commenting on it saying there is no excuse, but so far here are his splits between being on the road and at home.

Home: 6 G, 28 ABs, .107 BA, 1 HR, 3 RBIs, .381 OPS
Road: 8 G, 31 ABs, .323 BA, 2 HR, 7 RBIs, 1.094 OPS

Alright so I hope the bedding and everything got sorted out because it’s time start mashing and quiet the haters. The Fish are in town and then the Jays over the weekend. Let’s get hot G.

P.S. I imagine Ramos and Stanton’s apartment has to be a gigantic penthouse, but it’s still weird to imagine a 31 year old and a 28 year old living together when they’re both millionaires. Then again I guess having a roommate that’s also adjusting to a brand new lifestyle isn’t the worst of ideas for the first year. It’s just funny to picture.
