GamesIndustry – The success of Grand Theft Auto V is well documented, but a fresh report from MarketWatch offers more insight into the record-breaking impact of the hugely popular game. The site reports that with 90 million sales worldwide, and $6 billion in revenue, GTA V is the “most financially successful media title of all time”. While the report primarily makes comparisons with film, this almost certainly encompasses books, music and other entertainment products as well. The $6 billion revenues, for example, is far past the $4 billion achieved by best-selling films such as Star Wars and Gone With The Wind (adjusted for inflation, and adding DVD sales to the $3 billion box office receipts). Even the highest grossing film of all time – James Cameron’s Avatar, which made $2.8 billion – fails to match even half the money taken by Grand Theft Auto. It’s not completely clear whether the $6 billion is based purely on sales, or if it includes the “recurrent consumer spending” that Take-Two is still enjoying from the online multiplayer. Grand Theft Auto is the clear winner within the games space of course. The closest competitors include Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and Black Ops, which achieved 26.5 million and 24.2 million sales respectively – far short of GTA V’s total unit count.

Incredible. All you video gaming haters out there, take note. You can continue yelling at clouds, or you can start looking at the facts: Grand Theft Auto V, a video game, is the most profitable release in all of entertainment and media history. We’re talking movies, books, music, TV, Broadway, newspapers, circuses, extreme midget wrestling, Nate At Night. Basically anything that’s been recorded or put out there for people to see. It’s amazing. The fictional city of San Andreas has a higher GDP than some real life freaking nations. Combine this enormous nugget with the fact you’ve got Ninja streaming a cool $500K a month, the NBA holding actual drafts for NBA 2K18 with their species of Commish Adam Silver at the helm, and Twitch (owned by Amazon, ever heard of it?) being worth Barstool Syndicate here and we can run amok around town like warrior poets of the streets. Pulling in around a cool $4 billion in itself means the gaming revolution isn’t coming – It’s already won. And it’s going to Manifest Destiny itself from sea to virtual sea. The elderly and formerly bald may not see or like the potential, but anyone with an actual brain (doesn’t even need to be big) sees what’s going on here.

So, yeah, people can hate on us all they want for going dick deep into the gaming market as of late (well, since Rough N’ Rowdy broke my shoulder and I haven’t been able to do anything, including sleep, for the past 6 weeks). The 130 HOURS me and Dev streamed on Twitch in March alone only embiggin that notion. Of course Barstool wants a piece of the pie. And we’ve not only claimed a hefty slice, but we’re coming for the whole damn thing. xhibit A with the billionaires at Rockstar as we’ve been invited down their pants multiple times to stream at their HQ:

That’s Barstool on Rockstar’s platforms in which we were only featured for their 18 million followers on Instagram and Twitter as well as their blog which brings in more. Nbd. AND WE ARE RUNNING IT BACK TONIGHT. Play GTA V? Join our Barstool Syndicate here and we can run amok around town like warrior poets of the streets.
