The Crease Dive Episode 7 Featuring Joel Tinney From Hopkins

tinney-tcd2

For the 2nd week in a row, the boys had a Canadian guest on the podcast. Not a big deal or anything. The haters are absolutely furious but turns out we’re the #1 international lacrosse podcast now. Sorrey aboot that, eh?

Joel Tinney from Hopkins hopped on this week. He may not be the first guy to ever pull of a Hidden Ball Trick to perfection, but he’s certainly one of the best to ever do it.

He also had one of the grittiest goals in college lacrosse last weekend after embarrassing a few Princeton d-poles on his way to scoring this gem at Homewood.

He talked to us about all of that, about a huge matchup coming this weekend against Syracuse and about who would win in a death match between Baltimore lacrosse and Canada lacrosse. The boys also recap the previous week in college lacrosse, preview the huuuuuuuge slate of games we have on deck for this weekend, and wrap things up with a few picks and winners. Weekend Preview (March 9 – 11)

#1 Albany @ #2 Maryland | Saturday, 12pm | Big Ten Network

fields-vs-maryland

The biggest matchup of the season so far. #1 vs #2. Undefeated Albany vs undefeated Maryland. The last time these two played was at the NCAA Quarterfinals last year at Delaware. Maryland waxed the Danes in that game en route to their 4th straight appearance to Memorial Day Weekend. I really don’t think anything was stopping Matt Rambo and Colin Heacock from getting to that National Championship game last year so it was just pretty unfortunate that Albany had to go up against the Terps.

They also played earlier in the season and Maryland came out on top with a 1-goal win. So Maryland is 2-0 in their last two games against Albany. It’s hard enough to beat the same team 3 times in a row in college lacrosse, especially after Albany added Tehoka Nanticoke to the attack to play along with Connor Fields. Speaking of Fields, the biggest matchup in this game to watch is going to be between the two Connors. Last Saturday, Connor Kelly of Maryland put up 10 points against Notre Dame in their 12-10 win over the Irish. Just a couple of days later, Connor Fields put up 12 points in their ass beating that Albany put on UMass. 22 points between the two Tewaaraton candidates. Whichever of these two studs has the ball in their stick more on Saturday will come out with the win. Considering Albany’s FOGO Td Ierlan went 100% against Cornell last weekend, I have a feeling the Danes might win the possession battle.

#17 Johns Hopkins @ #6 Syracuse | Saturday, 1pm | ESPN3

Two of the most historic programs in the history of the game, there’s nothing to not love when Hopkins plays Syracuse. Especially when this one it going to be up in the Dome. I know that Albany vs Maryland is probably the bigger matchup considering it’s 1 vs 2, but I think this Hopkins vs Cuse game has a chance to be the most entertaining game of the weekend. Both teams love to just ball out offensively. The coaches on both sides are pretty good at just letting their boys play and allowing them to use their creativity to get shit done.

Syracuse is back to their Cardiac Cuse ways closing out a couple of 1-goal wins in a row against Army and Virginia. I can see this one coming down to a 1-goal game as well like it did last year

Only this time I see Hop coming out on top. Last week we had Ian MacKay of Vermont on the podcast for Friday. He followed that up on Saturday by scoring an overtime game winner against Jacksonville. I’d love to see that trend continue and have Joel Tinney score the overtime game winner for the Blue Jays in the Carrier Dome tomorrow.

#3 Duke @ #7 Loyola | Saturday, 3pm | Facebook Live

Honestly, I think we’re all getting a little spoiled this weekend. At noon we have Connor Fields vs Connor Kelly. And then at 3 we’re going to have Justin Guterding

vs Pat Spencer.

There are about 5 guys in the nation right now who I think will end up being Tewaaraton finalists at the end of the year. You have Trevor Baptiste, Connor Fields, Connor Kelly, Justin Guterding and Pat Spencer. So the fact that we get to see 2 matchups on Saturday featuring 4 of those guys is all the reason you need to park your ass on the couch on Saturday, grab a few cold ones and do nothing but watch college lax.

To be perfectly honest, I’m not getting a great read on this one. I have Duke as a Final Four team. I think they’re elite on the offensive side of the ball and they’re very good everywhere else. But I just have a feeling that Loyola is going to come away with the win in this game. It won’t slow down Duke on their way to Memorial Day Weekend at all. But this feels like a statement win kind of weekend for the Greyhounds.

Other Good Games To Watch:

  • Denver @ Notre Dame, Saturday, 2:30pm
  • Towson vs Ohio State, Saturday, 4pm
  • Villanova @ Penn, Saturday, 1pm

Jordie’s TCD Picks of the Week (2-2-1 Last Week, 14-9-3 Overall)

So unfortunately, at the time we were recording the podcast, LaxVegasLines didn’t have the spreads set up yet. So for this week, we did things a little differently this week. Which is probably for the best because last week was my 2nd week in a row going 2-2-1. Not that coming out even is necessarily that bad, but it’s still not great. So for this week, we decided to just go with straight up winners. If you’re interested in the spread though, here they are.

My picks last week were:

  • Ohio State -3.5 vs Marquette. They ended up losing that game 8-7. Bastards.
  • Maryland vs Notre Dame +2. Maryland won 12-10 after Connor Kelly popped off for 10 points. That one was a push.
  • Vermont -2.5 vs Jacksonville. UVM obviously got the win after Ian MacKay scored the overtime dagger, but no cover.
  • Virginia vs Syracuse +3. You knew this game was going to be a 1-goal game and Cuse came out on top.
  • My Mortal Lock of the Week was Rutgers -1 vs Brown. The Scarlet Knights came out on top 10-8.

For this week’s picks, I’m riding with…

  • Albany over Maryland
  • Hopkins over Syracuse
  • Loyola over Duke
  • Nova over Penn
  • And my Underdog of the Week is going to be Hofstra knocking down UNC for the 2nd year in a row.

And for those of you on the Fade Robby O train, the kid went 0-4-1 last week. That’s after going 1-8-1 combined in the 2 weeks prior. 1-12-2 in the last three weeks. Sheeeeeeeeeeeesh. If you’re fading Robby O right now, you’re making out like Daddy Warbucks. For his picks this week, he’s going with Nova, Maryland, Syracuse, Duke, and his Underdog of the Week is going to be Cornell knocking Penn St out of the Top 20. It’s the kid’s birthday tomorrow and he’s been losing picks left and right, the least you can do is throw him a follow on Twitter right now @R_Zetti.
