Mackenzie Dern Wins Her UFC Debut But Oddly Requires A Translator For Post-Fight Interview? (She's American)

She did it! It wasn’t pretty, and she’s got a TON to work on (mainly her takedowns and striking), but god dammit Mackenzie Dern has finally made her UFC debut and picked up a win in the process. I’m happy about that. Now, what’s overshadowing the win is Mackenzie Dern requiring a translator for post-fight interview. Dern is American-Brazilian, born and raised in Phoenix, and never even had any semblance of an accent until a few years ago. Somewhere around 2014 she picked up an extremely thick Brazilian accent overnight, and her English progressively got worse and worse the more she was in the public eye. This video demonstrates the “evolution” of her accent well, and has been going semi-viral recently.

Now, in her post-fight interview, she requested a translator, something I saw sarcastically joked about on Twitter before her fight, but never something I seriously considered a possibility. But it happened, and it was awkward because we all know she’s a native speaker who doesn’t need one. Her diehard fans will attack all who even suggest that she may be embellishing the truth about this to build a bigger Brazilian fanbase, and claim it’s because she spends a lot of time in Brazil speaking Portugese, but it very much seems like a case of Madonna picking up a British accent from having a few conversations with Guy Ritchie. Not a great look for my girl, but these bikinis are, so we’re gonna call it even.

This was my way of saying, “NOTHING TO SEE HERE!”, hitting the pitcher of water, and getting the fuck outta here.
