Yesterday I Harvested 200+ Pounds Of Deer Meat Like A Real Man

The majesty of hunting deer really connects you with nature and your surroundings. You appreciate the food you’re eating more when you know where it came from. I know that with each bite of tender venison I consume that I’m eating to sustain natural numbers of deer in the Texas Hill Country. That’s why I love harvesting deer.

This is my process in that aim to harvest.

On January 9th, I set an alert on my phone. Every 2 days, I call a local butcher shop at 10am. I simply say, “Do you have any unclaimed venison orders?” For weeks, the answer has been no. I call and call and call. Is it a grind? Absolutely. Like the ole saying goes, “You dont get the best puss puss in your life by swiping right once.”

Sometimes when you’re hunting, you dont shoot an animal every time. It can surely be frustrating.

After weeks of frustration, the butcher told me yesterday morning that he had unclaimed orders. I got in my truck, drove to the small town outside of San Antonio and thumbed through orders. Finally, I had found my buck. I pulled the trigger and selected a 155lb buck. It had been processed into chorizo, summer sausage, salami, ham steaks, backstraps, tenders, chili meat, ground burger, and of course jerky. The butcher loaded my boxes into my F-250 (I need a big truck for all the hauling I do on the blog) and I was about to be on my way. That’s when I saw it.

A little paper with “doe and 55lbs” on it. A small doe. All hamburger meat. Could I be so lucky and get two deer on one trip? You’re damn right I was. I pulled the trigger on that bad girl, drove home, and filled my deep freezer to the top. 200lbs of meat. There is nothing like harvesting your own food. It makes you feel like a real man.
