Chris Jericho Will Face Kenny Omega At WrestleKingdom This Year (Yes, You Read That Right)
After months of back and forth on Twitter that I thought would lead nowhere, later making me think it’d possibly lead to a match on Chris Jericho’s cruise, turns out Chris Jericho and Kenny Omega were actually building to a match at WrestleKingdom, New Japan’s WrestleMania. I’m still kind of in shock over this whole thing, as nobody had even the slightest clue this would be revealed last night, and nobody really knows how it’s happening. Is Jericho under WWE contract currently? If so, does that mean WWE will eventually get something in return? Does Vince McMahon know? Did Jericho sign a one date deal or is he gonna work a program out there?
I assume all of these questions will be answered in the coming months, but I’m excited about the whole ordeal, especially because of how many eyes will be on WrestleKingdom now. Like, I’d probably rather see Omega face Kazuchika Okada, Kota Ibushi, or even Cody Rhodes at the Tokyo Dome, because all three of those have better stories built-in and they’re all more athletically inclined than Jericho in 2017, but Jericho being at WK12 means SO many people are gonna see Okada vs Naito which will definitely blow everyone away, And also, I don’t mean to discount Y2J, as he can still obviously go (look at his last WWE match, the triple threat on SmackDown), AND he always turns it up for the WWE shows in Japan, AND he’s in there with the current best in the world who’s had a great match with a nine year old girl, so I’m sure this’ll be great.
Another thing is this high profile match will build the IWGP United States Championship in the exact way they set out to when it was debuted at the NJPW G1 shows in Long Beach, possibly making it as prestigious as the IWGP Intercontinental Championship. For now, I’ll stop speculating on semantics and just get excited for Chris mothafuckin’ Jericho at WrestleKingdom. What an entrance he’ll have.
