YB – “I made mistakes. I can’t whine about it. I’m the one that messed up and I’m paying the consequences. However, if I am given a second chance, I won’t need a third chance,” Rose told Pittsburgh radio station 93.7 The Fan. “And to be honest with you, I picked the wrong vice. I should have picked alcohol. I should have picked drugs or I should have picked up beating up my wife or girlfriend because if you do those three, you get a second chance. They haven’t given too many gamblers a second chances in the world of baseball.”
Actually a solid point. Mickey Mantle was a drunk and the greatest womanizer (hero) of all-time. Darryl Strawberry and Doc Gooden, although not in the Hall, were around more snow in their prime than a Polar Bear. Ty Cobb was a racist scum who beat up handicapped people in the stands and possibly killed a man. All were given numerous chances at redemption. Charlie Hustle gambled on other teams and on his own team TO WIN, not throw the games like the Black Sox. Maybe if he did choose to give his wife a couple shiners whenever he got the urge to gamble then he’d be in the Hall of Fame. Not sure why he would consider wife beating to be a “vice”, but to each his own.
