Man Rescued From The Taliban Thought Captors Were Joking When They Told Him Trump Was President

The HillA Canadian man who was recently freed after being held in Afghanistan by Taliban-tied kidnappers for five years said he thought his captors were joking when they told him Donald Trump was president.

Joshua Boyle told The Toronto Star that one of the captors said Trump was elected president before he was forced to film a “proof-of-life” video.

“It didn’t enter my mind that he was being serious,” Boyle said.

Boyle’s family — his American wife Caitlan Coleman and their three young children, who were all born in captivity — were rescued after U.S. intelligence directed Pakistani authorities to the family’s location.

Pretty cruel joke for the Taliban to play on these poor captives. Donald Trump? President? Of the United States? The most powerful person on the planet… The man with full control of the most powerful military in the history of the earth… is Donald Trump?

HA! Good one guys…

So this got me thinking, at what point could you be put in a time machine and taken back to where you WOULDN’T be stunned if someone told you Trump is president? At what point in the process did we start to believe it was actually possible? At what point did our brains actually wrap themselves around the reality that Donald J Trump COULD be the leader of the free world?

When polls showed him leading the Iowa caucuses in late 2015? When he actually won the New Hampshire primary in Feb 2016? South Carolina a few weeks later?

Super Tuesday?

When the RNC declared him the presumptive nominee on May 3rd?

Election night? Did it take until BNN made the unprecedentedly early call at like 9 pm?

Inauguration Day?

Do you still not believe it?

It’s a fascinating question. Imagine 5-years-ago you being told — without having watched the thing unfold in real-time and softly materialize in your brain over the course of a couple years — that Donald J Trump succeeded Barack Obama as President of the United States.

You’d be all sorts of fucked up and confused. Then you’d witness it for a week or two and be even more confused.
