Star Wars- J.J. Abrams, who launched a new era of Star Wars with The Force Awakens in 2015, is returning to complete the sequel trilogy as writer and director of Star Wars: Episode IX. Abrams will co-write the film with Chris Terrio. Star Wars: Episode IX will be produced by Kathleen Kennedy, Michelle Rejwan, Abrams, Bad Robot, and Lucasfilm.

“With The Force Awakens, J.J. delivered everything we could have possibly hoped for, and I am so excited that he is coming back to close out this trilogy,” said Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy.

THANK THE MAKER!!! LET’S FUCKING GOOOOOOOOOOO! This was the look on my face after seeing the trailer for The Last Jedi for the first time, and also the look on my face as I write this blog…

Nerds rejoice. The absolute fucking mastermind behind The Force Awakens returning to close out this trilogy is the best news I could have possibly received today and I’m one hundred thousand billion percent serious. There is nothing you could’ve told me that would make me happier. I’m a huuuuge JJ Abrams fanboy. The second Disney bought Lucasfilm and announced a new trilogy, my brother and I instantly said to each other, “Gotta bring JJ in.” It was such a no brainer. He turned the gig down at first due to his wife complaining that he’s been away from home for too long working on these big blockbusters, then reality set in, he realized he just turned down reviving the greatest saga in history, and said, “What the fuck am I doing? Did I just turn down Star Wars?” and signed on. And you know what they say, once you create Finn and Rey, you can’t stay away.

This makes me so excited for the next Star Wars Celebration, too. JJ’s gonna walk on stage and everyone is going to lose it like I can’t even begin to describe. Live look at Clembacca and myself when that happens…

I will acknowledge (because I’m an unbiased journalist) that JJ could be brought in because they watched The Last Jedi and were like “OH FUCK, RIAN RUINED EVERYTHING, GET JJ ON THE LINE HE HAS TO SAVE THIS!” But I highly doubt that. From what I’ve heard, Disney and Lucasfilm are very happy with the film Episode VIII is shaping up to be. Plus, I’ve already put my faith and trust in Rian.

And as always with big Star Wars news, Clem is here to give you his instant reaction. Take it away, Clem!

Thank you Robert. Like most things, I agree with Robbie’s take on this news. After it was announced that Lucasfilms was replacing Colin Trevorrow for Episode IX, I got scared. While the Star Wars movies during the Disney Era have been good, the hiring and firing of directors is starting to resemble Emperor James Dolan’s tyrannical reign with the Knicks. So the thought of replacing Trevorrow with someone outside of the Lucasfilms circle of trust frightened me because there was a chance THAT person could get fired during shooting and causing the filming to become a huge clusterfuck. However Disney went back to the well with JJ, which makes me happy.

I understand the people that didn’t love The Force Awakens because it felt like a remake for A New Hope. But I hope/think that this was the right move because it stabilizes the franchise while also raising the floor of what Episode IX will be (the ceiling is always the roof when it comes to Star Wars movie potential). Now if Episode IX is primarily about Kylo being redeemed and saving Rey from Snoke while a bunch of tiny furry creatures topple the First Order’s latest planet-killing superweapon from a forest moon, then those Force Awakens and JJ critics will be proven right once a for all. But JJ righted the ship from the dark days of the prequels with The Force Awakens and can now bring the ship home with the movie to end the trilogy of trilogies.
