Soldier Arrested For Having Ties With ISIS Which Is Frowned Upon In Military Circles

Lots of folks have asked me for my thoughts on this case. I think it’s pretty clear cut. Being an active duty soldier with ties to ISIS is actually bad. I think everyone with a brain would have that take. Here’s the part of the story that made me wanna write a blog about this subject.

Using that in the headline is the biggest clickbait bullshit you could write. Sure. It’s true. Most of the public doesn’t know what a Global War On Terrorism Service Medal actually means. So I’ll tell you.

To get this medal, all you have to do is be “a military service member that has served on active duty during a designated anti-terrorism operation for a minimum 30 consecutive or 60 non-consecutive days.” That’s it. 30 days straight in the military. You have it walking out of boot camp.

Headlines like the one above make the dude seem like he did something super special to earn that. Additionally, other news outlets are making this dude seem like the last action hero.

Every soldier and Marine has some hand-to-hand training. I rreeeaaallllyyyy doubt that an air traffic controller was the next Ken Shamrock just whoopin it on before clearing planes hot to take off. Doesn’t seem like that is a normal thing for air traffic controllers. That isn’t meant to shit on anyone who does that job. It’s important. Acting like everyone in the military is some GI JOE just isn’t true and the reporters know that. The air traffic controllers know that.

The story is bad enough without the inane exaggerations. “Soldier plots to help ISIS” is a juicy enough headline. No need to fucker it up by giving this dude credit that he wasn’t due. He’s a little ISIS helping puss puss not some feared warrior lookin like Bruce Willis in Tears Of The Sun.
