Five-Star Mo Bamba Reported to the NCAA By His Brother in Bizarre Video

Well, chalk this one up to shit you don’t commonly see. Mo Bamba, a top-5 recruit, committed to Texas and likely top-5 pick in next year’s NBA Draft has been accused by his older brother of receiving illegal benefits. Ibrahim Johnson, the older brother of Bamba, played college basketball himself posted a 22-minute video to Facebook in which he alleged Bamba received $200 weekly, vacation gifts and a king size bed from Greer Love. Love is the vice president of Huron Capital and has degrees from Indiana and Michigan. You can catch the video here:

It’s a bizarre move by a guy’s older brother, especially if you look at the top comments under the video. The first one Johnson says that it’s not a violation against Texas as they didn’t offer him anything, but Bamba himself. Apparently Johnson was planning on enrolling at whatever school Bamba would attend to go to grad school and eventually be his agent. However, Bamba apparently cut him out of the process. Johnson is on record saying Bamba won’t play this year because he already reported him to the NCAA and will meet with the NCAA.

NBC Sports  has said the following from a Texas spokesperson: “We’re aware of the recent social media post regarding our men’s basketball student-athlete Mohamed Bamba. As is usual practice by the NCAA, Mo’s amateur status was previously reviewed and final certified by the NCAA Eligibility Center. The NCAA has not informed us of any pending issues or eligibility concerns at this time regarding Mo. If there are further questions, we certainly will cooperate with the NCAA to the fullest.”

All in all this is an absolutely bizarre scenario as it’s regarding one of the best players in the class. If Bamba does stay eligible, Texas will be a likely top-25 team in the preseason and expected to make the NCAA Tournament for the second time in three seasons under Shaka Smart. However, if Bamba becomes ineligible it will open up a lot of questions not only for Texas, but other schools in the recruiting process and other major recruits. Let’s not be naive and act like this is the first and only time a recruit got some benefits.

But the main takeaway here is fuck Mo Bamba’s brother. You don’t try to mooch off your brother, get told no in what is likely the smarter decision and then try and put him on blast to ruin his career. That’s the definition of a piece of shit move.
