Navy Times- A sailor from the cruiser Shiloh whom Navy officials said fell overboard last week, triggering a massive search-and-rescue effort, has been discovered on board.

Presumed dead after going missing June 8, Gas Turbine Systems Technician (Mechanical) 3rd Class Peter Mims reportedly hid himself in one of the engine rooms, according to two sources familiar with the situation.

It is unclear how Mims survived a week in the engineering space or where he was hiding. He will be flown off Shiloh for evaluation soon.

Mims’ disappearance prompted a massive, 50-hour search-and-rescue effort off the coast of Japan that included Japanese Coast Guard and naval forces.

Helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft from the carrier Ronald Reagan along with a Navy P-8 maritime patrol aircraft, the destroyers John S. McCain and McCampbell, and the Reagan itself all assisted Shiloh in the search for the missing sailor, according to releasse from U.S. 7th Fleet during the search.

Japanese Coast Guard ship Kudaka also assisted in the search. A Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force ship and a second Japanese Coast Guard ship assisted early in the search that combed more than 5,500 square miles of water off Japan.

Oh man. Balloon boy times a thousand. Peter Mims goes fully dark and disappears in the engine room of this boat for a week:

I’ll be honest, I don’t hate the fact that Peter was a little tired of working and went to nap in the cozy engine room for a week. My junior summer of college, I interned as a cube monkey. I was so bored that 3 times a day, I would walk down the fire escape that led to the parking garage. Three floors down, the staircase had an overhang that was cool and dark. I’d nap for 12 minutes, 3 times a day, every day. Sometimes, sleeping at work is the best way to recharge the batteries and maximize productivity.

Google has nap pods at their offices, we have bean bags.

However, the problem here is that Peter didn’t tell a spotter. He forgot to notify a close pal of his sleepiness, and as a result, everyone thought he fell in the drink. This brought out both the American and Japanese Navies (nice to see that we’re working together after all that nonsense in the Pacific). They scoured the seas while he snoozed under their very noses!

In this case, Peter Mims took a bad nap.
