Phil Mickelson Officially Withdraws From The US Open To Attend His Daughter's Graduation

ESPN- Phil Mickelson has withdrawn from the U.S. Open, realizing there was no chance to get from his daughter’s high school graduation in California to make his tee time in Wisconsin. This is the first time Mickelson has missed the U.S. Open since he failed to qualify in 1993 and his first missed major since the 2009 Open. Mickelson had been holding out hope that, with the potential of storms over Wisconsin, there might be a four-hour delay that would allow him to watch his daughter graduate and zoom across the country in his private jet. His daughter Amanda is senior class president at Pacific Ridge School in Carlsbad, California, and is scheduled to give a commencement speech. Instead, the U.S. Open began Thursday under sunshine with little threat of bad weather all day. Roberto Diaz of Mexico, the next alternate, officially took Mickelson’s afternoon tee time.

BOOOOOOOOO

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

I’m not gonna lie, I was hoping we were gonna be on #PhilWatch for the early part of today. That would’ve been so much fun. I was hoping for a little bit of a weather delay in Wisconsin and the chance for Phil to parachute outta the sky and shoot a 67 or some shit. That would’ve been awesome. Can you imagine the tweet-by-tweet updates of him hopping on a private jet and racing against time? It would’ve been a blast. Instead the “Will Phil play?” saga ends with a whimper. Phil will not be on the grounds at Erin Hills. He will instead be at his daughter’s graduation watching her speak as valedictorian. I hate it. I really hate it. I know there’s two sides to the argument but I hate Phil missing any US Open. I saw somewhere that this is the first major since 1994 that Tiger and Phil have both missed. I’m not even the biggest Phil guy in the world but majors are better when he’s around. Alas.
