People forget that Carlos Pena went from being a journeyman first baseman who joined his fifth team in seven major league seasons in 2007 when he set the, then, Devil Rays’ single season record with 46 bombs. He hit 31 in the Rays’ American League pennant-winning season of 2008, and then led the league with 39 more in 2009, finishing ninth in the MVP voting both years. It was kind of all downhill from there, but those three years were electric!
