Someone Recreating Smash Mouth With Windows XP Sounds Is Actually An Impressive Musical Feat

So this is one of those things blowing up everywhere I turn and I feel like I have to put it on the blog to A) Give Smash Mouth a public relevant moment, they deserve it whenever they pop back up in the news 20 years after the mainstream spotlight has long stopped providing them its warm glow and B) Present something that’s actually an impressive accomplishment in this cover of “All-Star”. I mean for someone to think back to the glory days of Clippy the Microsoft Word animated paper clip and say “Yes, this is where I’ll find a little bit of musical 90s one-hit wonder genius.” It definitely takes a special internet brain to think of that, just like that Donald Trump emo song earlier.

So it’s cool, we can probably agree there. But the question I had: Is this a talent? Like there’s no denying it’s hard to do, probably took this guy a few dozen takes, hours of time preparing it and queueing things up, maybe even programming a computer to chime those things in with a certain sequence…it’s something impressive. But is it a talent? To me it’s sort of like the debate over Beyonce’s Grammys performance last night…should you be creaming yourself over her “performance” when she just kind of
walked around and sing-spoke things? Probably not. So I’m impressed by you Windows XP Smash Mouth cover but I’m not giving you any awards yet. Even if I would give Clippy the Best Solo Artist Grammy over Beyonce, personally.
