Red Sox broadcaster Jerry Remy announced today that he’s being treated for a second relapse of lung cancer. Remy was originally diagnosed with cancer back in 2008, underwent surgery at the end of that season, suffered from pneumonia following that surgery, battled depression the following year, was diagnosed with his first relapse prior to the 2013 season, and had a second surgery to remove that cancer as well. We all know what happened with his son in that same year, and today we learned of a second relapse here in 2017. Overall, it’s just been a really rough go over the last nine years or so for a guy who is beloved here in Red Sox Nation.

On a positive note, Remy tweeted out that “it’s under control,” so that’s great news. It just really sucks to hear that a guy who has already dealt with so much, now having to absorb yet another blow. The 2017 season will be Remy’s 30th as a Red Sox broadcaster with NESN, and the 64-year-old signed an extension to remain with the network this past offseason. It was reported that it was a multi-year deal, although the number of years was not disclosed. However, it was made public that Remy will be in the booth for 115 games each season.

Here’s to a speedy recovery, so that we can hear the RemDawg back in the booth as soon as possible.
