A Girl Has Raised Almost $14,000 For College On GoFundMe After Her Parents Allegedly Cut Her Off For Dating A Black Dude
NYDN – Allie Dowdle, from outside Memphis, has received more than $10,000 on GoFundMe after saying that her mother and father rejected her boyfriend Michael “strictly because of his race.”
The 18-year-old private school student said that she and her boyfriend have seen each other discreetly against her parents’ wishes but, over Christmas, her parents decided “to no longer support my future” when her boyfriend approached them again.
She wrote that her parents took away her car and phone and also said that they would no longer give her money to go to college.
Her father, Bill Dowdle, who owns a sporting goods store, told the Daily News that his daughter dating a black man may not be his “preference” because of “issues” involved with biracial dating in the South, but that it is not his place to pick who she dates now that she is 18.
The elder Dowdle said “it was never about race,” that he is not a racist and that his daughter’s statements about race are “a justification and gave her the moral high ground.”
He said that he and his wife would accept whomever their daughter wanted to date, but that he disapproved of both Michael and a previous boyfriend in part because Allie had started seeing them in secret.
Here’s the GoFundMe which has all of Allie’s story and it does seem pretty credible; she’s a girl who had a 4.0 GPA since 9th grade, was taking five AP classes, seems to have a decent head on her shoulders. But it’s WAYYYY too easy to throw parents under a bus as racist, drum up some internet support, and raise a shit ton of money from people who want to stick it to those racist assholes who don’t want young love across races. Kids fight with their parents all the time and being able to drag their name through the mud as a nuclear option while also making a shitload of money to pay for college…that’s a pretty tempting situation for anyone, no matter how strong their GPA or how well-dressed their multicultural boyfriends are.
And of course if the parents did do any of this to the girl for racist reasons, then that’s awful and they deserve the ungodly amounts of hate and creep shit that I assume the internet would unleash on them; you can envision a certain person for your daughter or son and hope that they’ll end up with whatever’s in your head, maybe even feel disappointed inside if they don’t end up with someone like that…something like cutting a kid off for that would be disgusting human being move. It has to be said. I’m more inclined to believe they’re just trying to parent and don’t want their seemingly perfect kid to be doing godknowswhat behind their backs, but I will bravely go on the record and say that racism and disowning your kids for the pigment of their boyfriend is bad.
Overall though whether she’s on the up and up or not, as long as she’s willing to blow up her relationship with her parents it’s not a bad move. You hook up with one black dude, or even pretend to, and all of a sudden the internet is showing up in full force to pay your bills way faster than any scholarship ever could. I had to pay off $50K+ in loans from my time in college, I would have GLADLY traded being disowned and jerking the nearest Tootsie Roll I could find for the world chipping in to pay my way to a Public Relations degree that I will literally never use another day in my life. All I’m saying is no matter where on the spectrum of truth this is, this girl’s GoFundMe is genius. Whether it’s evil genius or regular genius, TBD.
