Ryan Gosling's Golden Globes Speech To Eva Mendes That Everyone Loved? Yeah It Was Super Sexist Apparently

The Independent – In his acceptance speech for winning a Golden Globe for Best Actor in La La Land, Ryan Gosling took a moment to thank the ‘lady’ in his life, fellow actor Eva Mendes. While he was singing, dancing and playing the piano for the role, she was at home, holding the fort, looking after things so that we could have “one of the best experiences I’ve ever had on a film”.

“If she hadn’t taken all that on so that I could have this experience, would surely be someone else up here other than me to today. Sweetheart, thank you”, said the actor.

She wasn’t just making sure his dinner was cooked by the time he came home, no, she was “raising our daughter, pregnant with our second and trying to help her brother fight his battle with cancer”. Despite the swooning on social media for his Notebook-esque outpouring, I can’t help but feel that Eva Mendes, an award-winning actor in her own right, took one for the team and provided the emotional labour needed for Gosling to further his own career.

Gosling’s speech runs uncomfortably close to the old adage “behind every great man is a great woman”. No, she’s not behind you: she’s standing right next to you, and maybe you should tell the audience next time that you’ll be home to help out more.

This whole piece on The Independent is worth a hate read but honestly I think it’s a pretty interesting look at things. Not so much the writer Narjas Zatat’s opinion but it’s interesting because it’s amazing to see how much someone can twist something to fit their world views. In her world, Eva Mendes didn’t choose to support Ryan Gosling, she didn’t elect to take less roles (or recognize her star may have been falling a bit while Ryan Gosling’s was going sky high). No, in this writer’s world, Eva Mendes was Jedi mind tricked into giving her life up to support a MAN and Ryan Gosling should have known better and sacrificed his career preemptively to give her a shot because that’s what equality is all about. I mean can you imagine being that detached from reality that you could read that much into a pretty standard and kind award acceptance speech? It’s almost impressive when you compare it to how every other outlet covered it:

To most it was a dreamy dude showing love to his equally hot wife in a way that probably had 100,000 tweets saying “#goals,” to this chick it was a speech pointing out Eva Mendes’ chronic suffering from Stockholm Syndrome at the hands of her male oppressor. Your media at work.

But on the off chance she’s right, I’m going to do my part here to bring more attention to Eva Mendes to make up for her many sacrifices for Ryan Gosling’s career. Compromise!

I also really enjoyed her acting performance in Training Day (NSFW). Way better than Gosling would have done there that’s for sure. Go change a diaper, Ryan.
