DM – The US Air Force’s mystery military space plane has now been in orbit for 600 days.
The X-37B space plane, an experimental program run by the Air Force, launched atop a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket on May 20, 2015.
While some details of its payload have been revealed – we still do not know exactly what’s on board.
Theories have ranged from it being a space bomber, to a probe on a mission to ‘take out’ spy satellites.
Finally, the government is doing something right. Something we can all get behind. And needless to say it’s the military doing all the heavy lifting. Because who else would?
Ever since NASA ditched the Space Shuttle to focus on decidedly non-rocket launchy stuff like Global Warming, I been waiting for them do something, anything, to justify having a bunch of rocket scientists on the payroll. And I’ve been hoping all along they’d get going building a Death Star. But barring that, the X-37B seems like it’ll do nicely.
The best part of the equation is how they’re not telling anyone what’s in it or what it does. Give people a blank canvas and they’ll fill in it with their worst fears, every damned time. Is it a space bomber? Anti-satellite weapon? Does it have a death ray that can kill an ISIS bomber in his tracks? A mind-control device? A machine that can weaponize weather? Five lasers that can come together to reduce Alderaan to space gravel? It doesn’t matter. For all intents and purposes, the thing could be an empty box. Or just beam Direct TV signals for all it matters. Just so long as the rest of the world thinks it can do something horrifying, X-37B is doing its job.
Hell, it’s even got a mysterious name. Instead of calling it something inspiring like Valiant or Reliant, they make it sound like something Rod Serling came up with in 1958. So well done, US Air Force. You have every reason to be proud of this technological terror you’ve constructed. x-37B is now the ultimate power in the universe. Fear will keep the local systems in line. Fear of this battle station.
