I Still Don't Understand How This Vincent Trocheck Shootout Goal Counted, But I Love It
Luckily for everybody, the Lightning still ended up winning the game 4-3 in a shootout. The chaos shit storm that would ensue if this Trocheck shootout goal gave Florida the win would be ridiculous. But either way, I really need somebody with a better brain than mine to explain to me why this was counted as a good hockey goal. Here’s the official ruling on it but I’m still just as confused after reading that.
I get that camera angles work in mysterious ways. But I’m not exactly sure how you can say the puck was kept in motion towards the goal when the last move he made before losing control was on the backhand? I guess at that point it’s basically a Datsyuk minus having control of the puck?
But I don’t hate the call. Well… I mean… I would hate the shit out of it if this happened against the Flyers. But since it didn’t, I don’t hate the call at all. We all know that Trocheck was looking to stuff it 5-hole but just lost control of the puck. But what if he wasn’t? What if he intentionally whiffed on the puck? I get it’s a drastically small possibility that was the case, but you still have to take that into account. If you call that goal off, then that sets the precedent. From that moment forward, no player will ever be able to intentionally whiff on the shot ever again and have their goal count. It’s a slippery slope from there. So good for Vincent Trocheck. He becomes the Roe v Wade of bizarro land shootout goals.
And in case you were wondering how the Panthers and Lightning ended up in the overtime shootout to begin with…. Steven A. Stamkos.
How? Why? What? He had almost no angle to work with there and still finds a way to roof it on Reimer. That was disgusting.
