David Ross Hit A Home Run In His Final Regular Season Game At Wrigley, And Left To A Standing Ovation

St Louis Cardinals v Chicago Cubs

This was an awesome moment. On a day when there was so much sadness, baseball needed a moment like this. David Ross is a backup catcher. Let’s not blow things out of proportion and act like we’re waving goodbye to one of the all-time greats. Who we are waving goodbye to, though, is one of the all-time great GUYS in the sport. I got the chance to cover Ross when he was here in Boston, and every single one of his teammates would gush about this dude, what he brought to the clubhouse, and how he impacted the game when it was his turn to get behind the plate.

He’s taken that reputation that he had in Boston, and it seems like it’s been multiplied by a hundred in Chicago. All the young stars on that Cubs team love Rossy and look up to him, and I think it speaks volumes that you can be one of the clubhouse leaders of a powerhouse team as a backup catcher. That speaks to the type of baseball mind that David Ross is. There’s a reason why it meant so much to Jake Arrieta to throw a no-hitter with Ross as his catcher this year. Great job by Joe Maddon making sure that Ross got his moment in the sun, because he damn well deserved it.
