Giants Bring Back OT Will Beatty With A 1-Year Deal
NY Post- Desperate times call for desperate measures, and that is why Will Beatty is once again employed to play for the Giants. As much as the coaching staff and front office acted and sounded as if the offensive line would be fine, results this summer showed otherwise, and a move was made Tuesday to import some help – from a familiar face.
Things did not end well with Beatty – the Giants’ first-round pick in 2009 – but both sides believe a reunion can work. “Will expressed significant interest in returning to the Giants and he got his wish,’’ a source familiar with Beatty’s signing told The Post. This is not merely a look-see for Beatty. He received a fully guaranteed one-year deal for $1.1 million, plus another $750,000 in incentives largely based on playing time. The source said the Giants are looking at Beatty as a right tackle, a spot he played sparingly (four starts as a rookie) before moving in as the starting left tackle in 2011, a role he filled for four consecutive seasons. Beatty will compete with Marshall Newhouse, the incumbent right tackle, for a starting job, and likely ultimately replace him. The Giants have no interest in moving second-year left tackle Ereck Flowers out of that spot.
Welcome back Will Beatty, I guess? I mean I never really had any beef with Beatty other than he never became the legit left tackle I hoped he would be and HE ALWAYS GETS FUCKING HURT. But I guess the Jerry Reese and the front office was sick of seeing Marshall Newhouse get his lunch handed to him over and over and over and over again. So while I don’t think this is a permanent solution for the offensive line, I guess it’s good enough for now. Jerry Reese is going to let Future Jerry Reese worry about how they will shuffle the line when Beatty gets hurt in three weeks because Past Jerry didn’t want to upgrade the line in the offseason. Just like how Future Me will have to worry about Past Me ate $12 of Taco Bell for lunch. It got the job done for the time being and felt good doing it. Plus you always need a guy with a cage facemask on the team.
