Track & Field Needs To Add Enforcers If They Want To Stop Runners From Diving

It’s the finish that has taken the sporting world by storm. Last night the Bahamas’ Shaunae Miller defeated American Allyson Felix in the 400m final by diving across the finish line. A move that divided the world in half between those who think Shaunae Miller’s dive was a great example of laying it all out on the line and doing whatever it takes to get the win, and those who think she’s a a fraudulent cheat who has disgraced and besmirched the integrity of Track & Field. In the end, the dive is a legal move so Miller got the gold. But that didn’t stop everyone in the world from becoming track experts all of a sudden. So for the contingent of people who want to see diving taken out of Track & Field, I have one easy solution for you; add enforcers.

There’s a reason why you don’t see diving in hockey. It’s because players know that if they take a dive during play to draw a penalty, they are getting put through the boards the next shift by the meanest, nastiest hard ass on the other team. It’s called self-policing. No crime goes unpunished. You want to make a mockery out of the game and flop around the ice like a fish out of water? Well an enforcer will be there to give you a reason to roll around on the ice later in the game. I bet Shaunae Miller would think twice about diving across the finish line if she knew she’d have one of the American shot put chicks putting her through the ground the next time up. I’m just sayin’. And even if that didn’t happen, Track & Field could still be more like hockey and hand out embellishment penalties and/or fines for diving. But instead of being penalized, she was awarded a gold medal.

So now I guess Track & Field has one of two options. They can either idly stand by and watch as their sport becomes soccer like the NBA did. Or they can act swiftly to make sure that diving is eradicated from competition. The same way that there is no diving whatsoever in hockey.
