Some Good, Some Bad, Some Ugly from Opening Night of the Democratic National Convention

Democratic National Convention: Day One

Convention season, round two. The Democrats. Philadelphia. I’ll say this week about the DNC precisely what I said last week about the RNC.

Party conventions are what they are — if you’re hardcore Democrat, you’re gonna LOVE this. If you’re hardcore Republican, you’re gonna HATE this. If you’re me, you’re happy cuz content jumps right off the television screen and hits you in the face. It’s everywhere. Can’t miss it.

The obvious elephant in the room was that leaked DNC emails Friday proved that the DNC hates Bernie Sanders, the man who’s won 1,846 pledge delegates and 43% of all Democratic primary votes. His supporters were there and they did not go unnoticed.

US-VOTE-DEMOCRATS-CONVENTION

Sarah Silverman — a Hillary supporter who actually became a Bernie supporter in March and then a Hillary supporter again once Bernie lost — told “Bernie or bust people” they were ridiculous. That saga was probably the most awkward/ugliest of the night for the DNC.

Smooth, Sarah. “To everyone on earth, when I don’t get my way… I pout!” She later jumped on the post-game spin zone and was a disaster. And by disaster I mean she was clearly shitfaced. That’s not a bad thing, unless you’re sandwiched between Jake Tapper and a U.S. Senator and expected to portray an ounce of intellect.

Michelle Obama did well. Not as well as she did last Monday imo…

…but she spoke quite powerfully with a “who do you want shaping the world for your kids” message. It had a strong impact.

Cory Booker, the U.S. Senator from New Jersey who was on the shortlist for Hillary’s VP sweepstakes, gave a very Obama-2004-esque speech. It was well-received. Lots of Democrats see a bright future in this dude.

Then Elizabeth Warren came out. She sucked. And was boo’d by Bernie supporters when she endorsed Hillary.

Then it was time for the Bern man.

All things considered, Bernie did exactly what Hillary wanted him to do. He basically gave his stump speech and added “and Hillary will do that!” to the end of every paragraph. It worked. The people were fired up and he seemed genuine. He did not, sadly, Ted Cruz the convention. What a missed opportunity.

He did provide some comic relief, however, as his supporters were all crying and super emotional. Typical socialists amirite.

After a primary season as wild, contentious and divisive as this one — and coming off a weekend full of purely negative controversy — night one needed to clear the air. Needed to clear the stage. And it tried. While there were horrendous attempts at comedy and mocking the Donald, there were also successful attempts at rolling out key figures from the last year, having them sing their swan song, and moving them right along. We’re getting closer to the Clinton Machine showing off its muscle, which it will.

Tomorrow = Slick Willy. Wednesday = Biden & Barry. Thursday = Chelsea & Hillary. I tweet up a storm during these because… it’s my job. So follow along and I’ll see ya out there.

PS – I am not at all joking when I say that tomorrow night may be the last major speech of Bill Clinton’s life. If it comes down to it as we near election day, that motherfucker will die in order to push Hillary over the edge. If you think otherwise you don’t know Bill like I know Bill. It’s all or nothing here and Slick Willy will win. Sympathy wins votes. Bill’s ready.
