Report: Former Iowa State Player Bryce Dejean-Jones Dies From Gun Shot Wound At Age 23

Ames Trib- Former Iowa State men’s basketball player and current New Orleans Pelican Bryce Dejean-Jones has died, the Dallas (Texas) County coroner’s office confirmed to the Ames Tribune on Saturday. He was 23 years old. The coroner’s office was not immediately able to provide the cause of death. Dejean-Jones played his senior season at ISU after previous stints at USC and UNLV. He went undrafted by the NBA, but signed a three-year contract with the Pelicans in February.

Damn man. That’s some real shitty news. Sad stuff. The details are pretty scarce still but it sounds like Dejean-Jones got shot in the stomach Friday night, bled out and died on Saturday. Dead at 23 years old. Way way way way too young. Dejean-Jones transferred to Iowa State in 2014 after stints at USC and UNLV and was on the Fred Hoiberg team in the post Melvin Ejim/DeAndre Kane era. He was your classic Hoiberg transfer who came onto the team and instantly made them better. I swear to god Hoiberg had those dudes coming off an assembly line. As soon as guys would graduate. a new crop of dudes would transfer in and they wouldn’t miss a beat. Big 12 Championships and NCAA Tournament appearances aplenty. The system worked and I guarantee Hoiberg wishes he could rip up his Bulls contract and come back to Ames and be king again. Anyway I hated those Hoiberg teams but mostly just because they were so good and so much better than the Iowa basketball teams. Bryce Dejean-Jones had just signed a 3-year deal with the New Orleans Pelicans in February. A life and basketball career cut way too damn short. Shit sucks. RIP.
