CNN — Democratic senators are discussing whether Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz should be removed as the head of the party because she has become “too toxic” in the ongoing Democratic civil war.
“There is a lot of sentiment that replacing her would be a good idea. It is being discussed quietly among Democratic senators on the floor, in the cloakroom and in lunches,” a senior Senate Democratic source told CNN on condition of anonymity to discuss private talks among lawmakers.
Wasserman Schultz was swept into the center of the ongoing intraparty war between Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders after she criticized Sanders on CNN last week. Wasserman Schultz said Sanders’ tepid response to chaos sparked by his supporters at the Nevada Democratic Convention was “anything but acceptable” and compared it to a Donald Trump campaign event.
Sanders and his campaign condemned the outburst and death threats his supporters sent to the Nevada chairwoman, but refused to apologize for them. Wasserman Schultz said his decision to complain about how his supporters were treated in Nevada only “added more fuel to the fire.”
Come on Debbie, act like you’ve been there before. Your job as DNC chair, as the head of your party, is simple. You do 2 things and 2 things only: 1) Talk about how awesome your party platform is; 2) Talk shit about Donald Trump and the Republicans. That’s it. You don’t take sides within the party. You don’t compare Bernie supporters to Trump supporters. Bernie supporters are the most sensitive motherfuckers on the planet; if you tweet about capitalism they’ll start crying on Facebook Live or erect a bunch of tents and launch an Occupy Your Apartment Building movement.
But she compared them to Trump supporters so now what? Well Bernie endorsed her rival in her Florida Congressional primary and senior Democratic Senators are walking around making anonymous leaks about how she’s toast. Everyone’s distancing themselves from Debbie like she’s got the hygiene of a Bernie protester. Sad!
You don’t have to be an experienced political operative to sense that ousting the party head a few months before the National Convention is not a great sign. This news — combined with Trump surging in head-to-head polls and touting 90s Clinton conspiracy theories — makes it more and more clear that we will indeed be rewarded with the ruthless political dogfight we’ve all been waiting for.
PS – Did somebody say “Toxic”?
