(ESPN ) — Nike terminated its endorsement contract with Manny Pacquiao on Wednesday after the Filipino boxer made derogatory remarks towards same-sex couples. “We find Manny Pacquiao’s comments abhorrent,” the company said in a statement. “Nike strongly opposes discrimination of any kind and has a long history of supporting and standing up for the rights of the LGBT community.” Based on Pacquiao’s comments, a spokesman confirmed that he is no longer on the endorsement roster. Pacquiao has been an endorser for Nike for a little more than eight years.
Bravo, Nike! Bra-vo.
I love these insanely transparent PR moves. I guess you’ve gotta do them, but they’re just absurd. Nike is parting ways with the 37 year old boxer who’s scheduled to retire in about 15 minutes because he doesn’t like gay people. The fact that he will soon be running for president of a largely irrelevant country rather than competing on boxing’s biggest stage has nothing to do with the decision. If this was Tyson in his prime he’d still get terminated because of his abhorrent behavior. Nike is above any and all connections to such disgusting behavior, enjoy your sneakers made by a six year old in an Indonesian sweatshop. He’s malnourished and will be dead soon but don’t worry, he thinks gays are the bees knees.
