Man Breaks Ferris Wheel Ride World Record At Navy Pier

CHICAGO (AP) — A manager of Chicago’s Navy Pier rode the tourist spot’s Ferris wheel for more than two days, bringing the world record for the longest ride to the birthplace of the amusement park favorite.

Clinton Shepherd spent 48 hours, 8 minutes and 25 seconds riding Navy Pier’s Ferris wheel over the weekend. Shepherd is park operations manager at Navy Pier.

He calls it “a very overwhelming experience,” made easier by the support of friends, family and the city of Chicago.

Guinness World Records allowed him to have one five-minute break each hour. He played hours of videogames to stay awake during the ride, and watched James Bond and Batman movies. Supporters followed him on Twitter.

The first Ferris wheel was built in 1893 in Chicago for the World’s Columbian Exposition.

I really wanted to hate this guy. I really did. Calling it “overwhelming” and saying how you needed the support of friends and family is patently absurd. You spent 2 days playing video games and relaxing. Don’t fucking tell me it was tough. What you did sounds like a perfect weekend. No one to bother you, no errands or real life shit you have to deal with, just an isolation cube where you can decompress on some Bond and Batman. And that’s where my whole perception of this “feat” changed. Clinton Sheperd is a god damn genius. Of all the Guinness records you could attempt this has to be the absolute best right? It takes ZERO real world effort. Your skills need to be 1) You don’t like people. 2) You like video games. 3) You can handle the smell of your own farts in a glass cube. That’s it. That’s everything. I, and basically ever regular guy in this world, can check off all 3 of those requirements. So hats off Clinton. Snake it till you make it. Getting credit for something every other guy would willing do at the drop of a hat. I’m not mad, I’m jealous.
