28 Years Ago Today Ron Hextall Became The First Goalie To Shoot And Score In The NHL

Kind of a slow news day in the hockey world so let’s throw it back to the time 28 years ago when Sexy Hexy became the 2nd goaltender in NHL history to be credited with a goal and the first goalie in NHL history to actually shoot and score. Now in terms of all-time hockey goalies, I wouldn’t say that Ron Hextall is even close to being considered one of the greats. Sure the Flyers had a few really good teams during his two stints in Philly but rarely did his save% ever crack .900. However, Ron Hextall was one of a kind out there. He would score goals, he would do his part to block some shots, and he would beat the shit out of you if you ever pissed him off. He was the embodiment of Philadelphia Flyers hockey for so long. The term “savage” gets thrown around these parts a lot, but Ron Hextall was just that. Fucking love that guy.

Sidenote: Just recently decided to go back and try to find some old pictures of Hexy during his playing days in Philadelphia and stumbled across a gold mine.

Few More Quick Points:

– Flyers take on the New York Islanders tonight @ 7.

– Andrew MacDonald will be making his season debut with the Flyers after spending the first quarter of the season in Lehigh Valley. Honestly, I’m a little excited to see if MacDonald has anything to offer tonight. I’d rather see him out there than Brandon Manning and/or Nick Schultz at this point.

– Some strange stuff going on with Vincent Lecavalier lately. The Flyers are saying Lecavalier, who has been a healthy scratch for most of the season, is injured. If they put him on LTIR, then they’ll have some more wiggle room with the cap. I don’t know. The whole Vinny situation is a mess and I just feel bad for the guy. I wish someone would just trade for him so I can stop feeling so sad about it.
